Covid-19: departments In France experiencing a worrying peak

Covid-19   For the past ten days, the number of new cases of Covid-19 recorded in France has been around 25,000, sometimes a little less, but also a little more, as was the case on Wednesday 3 February. According to data from Public Health France, 26,362 new contaminations were recorded in 24 hours and 358 patients died in hospital. The results of the indicators are indeed worrying in several parts of France, especially with regard to resuscitation services. 57 departments have a bed occupancy rate of more than 60% for Covid patients. Three departments are of particular concern: the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, the Hautes-Alpes and the Alpes-Maritimes. In terms of contamination, if the incidence rate has dropped slightly over two weeks, peaks are observed in around ten departments and the situation is once again worrying.

Head of French hospital federation calls for new Covid-19 lockdown

The head of France's hospital federation on Friday called for a new nationwide lockdown to curb the spread of Covid-19 infections, in the latest sign of tensions between the government and health officials on the issue. Valletoux spoke a day after Prime Minister Jean Castex  said  the Covid-19 situation in France was "fragile" but did not justify a new lockdown at present. The prime minister also touched on the sensitive issue of France's vaccination drive, which has been widely criticised for its slow pace. He said the first doses of AstraZeneca’s vaccine would arrive in France by the end of the week, helping the government reach a target of four million inoculations by the end of the month. President  Emmanuel Macron  has promised to offer a vaccine to all adults in France by the end of the summer.
